Liverpool are still monitoring the swift development of Belgian wonderkid Jeremy Doku, who had snubbed the Reds a few years ago.

In a report published by HNL, it has been revealed that Rennes whizkid Jeremy Doku had snubbed Liverpool a few years ago and former Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku had played a key role in his decision. However, it appears the Reds have still maintained their interest in the Belgian youngster this season, identifying him as a long-term target.

Doku enjoyed a rapid rise in stature this summer, due to his exceptional performances at RSC Anderlecht that saw him directly contribute to six goals in seven matches in the Jupiler Pro League. But, life has difficult following his €26 million move to Rennes, with the winger yet to be involved in a single goal in nine competitive appearances for the French side.

Doku’s lack of productivity is surprising given the fact that Rennes has been one of the highest-scoring teams in Ligue 1 this term. However, it hasn’t deterred Liverpool from maintaining their interest, with the Reds constantly sending their scouting agents and data analysis team to keep a close eye on the Belgian.

There is no doubt that the reigning Premier League giants have some work to do in the transfer market anyway, following an injury crisis in the defensive department this season. They are already missing out on the services of Virgil van Dijk through long-term injury, while the likes of Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho have all picked up injuries at some point during this campaign.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp is desperate to sign a new centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window. However, the club’s interest in Doku is an exciting one given the fact that there is no possibility of the transfer happening in winter.

It is something Liverpool could afford as well, thanks to the emergence of summer signing Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international has been involved in a total of eight goals in 13 competitive matches, with even Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand recently praising the ex-Wolves man for his early impact at Anfield.

Jota’s contributions in the final third means Liverpool can afford to scout a long-term prospect like Doku for an extended amount of time. The young Belgian has been improving at Rennes and it won’t be surprising to see him thrive in Ligue 1, so it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga unfolds in the future.
