Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing unsettled French striker Olivier Giroud from Chelsea in the January transfer window.

According to a report by The Boy Hotspur, Olivier Giroud has emerged on the radar of Tottenham over a possible move in the January transfer window. The French striker is keen on leaving Chelsea this winter in order to secure regular game-time ahead of next year’s European Championship.

Giroud joined Chelsea from Arsenal in January 2018 and has since been a fine backup option for the Premier League heavyweights. The French international is currently behind Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham in the pecking order for strikers at Stamford Bridge and has been reduced to a bit-part role at the onset of the 2020/21 season.

Despite his reduced role at Chelsea, he has always chipped in with important contributions, as was the case in the UEFA Champions League win over Rennes this week. However, with starts coming few and far between, Giroud’s patience has run out and he is eager to seal a move away from Stamford Bridge this winter. Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing him.

At Tottenham, Harry Kane has been in rampant mood this season and has been one of the best players in Europe two months into the new campaign. Beyond the England captain, Jose Mourinho has the young Carlos Vinicius as a backup option, while Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura can be makeshift options as well.

However, with the former Chelsea manager choosing to slowly ease Vinicius into the first-team setup, it might not hurt to have a short-term solution in a striker like Giroud. In fact, it is still quite unclear if Tottenham will be able to sign Vinicius on a permanent deal next summer, as per the report.

On a personal level for Giroud, though, the move to Tottenham might not make sense as he is only likely to get starts in the UEFA Europa League and cup fixtures, should the transfer go through. Instead, joining West Ham United, who are also interested in signing him, could well be a prudent move on the part of the Chelsea striker.

Apart from Tottenham and West Ham, the likes of PSG, Inter Milan and Inter Miami are also vying for Giroud’s signature. As for Spurs, the 34-year-old is simply on their radar for now and it will be interesting to see if they jump into action in his pursuit come January.

Giroud, who is reportedly eager to leave Chelsea, has repeatedly been urged to call it quits at the west London club, although Frank Lampard recently insisted that the Frenchman will get minutes. It now remains to be seen if Tottenham do make a move for him this winter, or if some other suitor swoops him away instead, should the exit from Chelsea materialise.
