Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly ready to fight it out for the services of Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram.

According to a report published by Mundo Deportivo, Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram may be on to bigger and better things from next season as Barcelona and Real Madrid get ready to lock horns for his signature.

Born to legendary French footballer and World Cup winner Lilliam Thuram, Marcus rose to fame last season after enjoying his breakout campaign with Borussia Monchengladbach. He had moved to the Gladbach outfit in the summer transfer window of the last year from now Ligue 2 side Guingamp.

Thuram proved to be a result of excellent scouting, as he scored ten goals and gave eight assists, eventually propelling Gladbach to a fourth-place finish over Bayer Leverkusen. In the process, he also showed some excellent displays across the front three and formed an excellent bond with Alassane Plea.

While he has not quite hit the mark yet in the league this season, scoring one goal in six appearances, Thuram has proven his potency in the Champions League, scoring two goals — both against Real Madrid – and setting up one for his teammate. The same team he scored a brace against is now reportedly set to pursue him in the summer.

Truth be told, this transfer has both, its pros and cons. On the one hand, at 23, Thuram has the potential to become Madrid’s starting left-winger for a decade and even has the capabilities to displace Eden Hazard from that role, who has faced innumerable injury problems in his time in Spain.

On the contrary, it would come as a blow to the likes of Vinicius Jr, and Rodrygo, who have shown their high ceiling in the front three. Neither of them has quite shown the level of game-deciding finish Thuram boasts of, but 20 and 19 respectively, they have their entire careers ahead of them.

Zinedine Zidane has to, however, face competition from eternal rivals Barcelona in their pursuit of the Frenchman’s signature. The Catalan giants possess a lot of firepower in attack as well but lack a striker. While Thuram has and can fill in that role, his best position is at left-wing – one occupied by prodigious talent Ansu Fati.

Barcelona will have to shift one of the two brilliant youngsters out of their position in order to fill all gaps in the lineup, and it could hamper their progress.

On paper, this deal makes little to no sense for either club as they boast a plethora of talent in their ranks, more so in the offensive unit. Thuram, who has just received his first international call-up, can hope for more good news as he continues to make huge strides under Marco Rose.

If Barcelona should buy a striker it would be Lautaro Martinez and not Marcus Thuram! So leave the Frenchman at Real Madrid! Oh, and don’t forget Mino Raiola!

  2. I don’t want support the idea of bring in another winger, real Madrid needs a brilliant pass striker whose eye is always on the neat. But we have Marcus Thuram equal winger who can deliver the same as him.
