Liverpool have set their sights on Perr Schuurs and are monitoring the progress of the Ajax defender, who once had a trial with the Reds.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Perr Schuurs is the subject of interest from Liverpool over a possible move in the January transfer window. The Premier League champions are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old centre-back, who has previously had a trial at the club a couple of years ago.

Perr Schuurs joined Ajax from Fortuna Sittard in January 2018 and was immediately sent out on loan to his former club. The young defender made his Eredivisie debut early in the 2018/19 season, but spent the majority of that campaign with the Jong Ajax side, with Matthijs de Light and Daley Blind the first-choice central defensive pairing.

Following the departure of de Ligt, Schuurs, who had a trial with Liverpool as a 17-year-old, grew in stature within the Ajax first-team setup, making 17 appearances across all competitions. This term, though, he has stepped into the shoes of de Ligt for good, featuring in all but one game so far. And, his progress seems to have been duly noted by a number of clubs, particularly Liverpool.

Liverpool are set to be in the market for a centre-back in the January transfer window, following the injury suffered by Virgil van Dijk. With the Dutchman a long-term absentee, Jurgen Klopp’s options at the back have taken a hit, especially with Joel Matip constantly struggling with fitness issues.

Matip’s injury woes means Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips, who impressed in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over West Ham United this week are the only remaining centre-backs at the disposal of the Liverpool boss, with Fabinho an option to be a makeshift central defender as well.

As a result, Liverpool are starting to get linked with a number of centre-backs, with Diego Carlos a target for them once again. Now, Schuurs has emerged on Liverpool’s radar, with the Reds keeping tabs on his progress. In particular, Klopp was impressed by the youngster’s performance when the two clubs met in the UEFA Champions League group stage Matchday 1.

While the Premier League champions are simply monitoring the Ajax prodigy, but a January move could be a possibility. What now remains to be seen is if Liverpool do launch the offensive for him this winter, or if they make a move for someone else.
