Liverpool are reportedly in contact with Tottenham Hotspur over the possibility of signing Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on deadline day.

According to a report from The Independent, Premier League champions Liverpool are lining up a shock move for out of favour Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on the summer transfer deadline day.

The 28-year-old Gazzaniga has been with Tottenham since 2017, having joined from Southampton. However, the Argentine has largely played second-fiddle to club captain and first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris during his time at the club.

He did get an extended run in the first-team last season when Lloris was out with an elbow injury for a prolonged period, but Gazzaniga failed to make an impression. And with Tottenham signing Joe Hart on a free transfer this summer, the Argentine has dropped further down the pecking order at the North London outfit.

Indeed, Gazzaniga hasn’t made a single appearance for Spurs this season, while he was recently axed from their UEFA Europa League squad by Jose Mourinho in order to make room for new signing Sergio Reguilon.

It has been claimed that the Lilywhites are open to cashing in on him before the window closes. And, now Liverpool have emerged as a shock potential destination for the Argentine shot-stopper.

Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been one of the top performers in the Premier League over the past couple of years. However, the Brazilian picked up an injury last week and is set for a six-week spell on the sidelines, as confirmed by manager Jurgen Klopp.

“Let me say, it could have been worse with that injury, that’s for sure. We were slightly lucky but it’s not that he can play against Everton. I don’t want to put a timeframe on it but four weeks could be possible, six weeks is maybe more likely, but I don’t know,” the German tactician said.

Alisson’s backup, Adrian, has hardly been impressive during his time at Anfield. The Spaniard was one of the main reasons for Liverpool’s exit from the UEFA Champions League last season, while he was once again terrible in the 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday.

And with there being the possibility of loaning out youngster Caiomhin Kelleher this summer, the Merseyside giants are now considering a swoop for Gazzaniga, and have already made contact with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Argentine might not represent a major upgrade on Adrian, given his error-prone nature. It will be interesting to see if the deal sees the light of the day.
