Leeds United are hopeful of signing Arsenal’s youth prodigy, Sam Greenwood as the club continues to poach talented youngsters this summer.
According to Football.London, Sam Greenwood is on the verge of becoming the next signing for Leeds United. The young Arsenal prodigy is set to have a medical at Elland Road, although he will only be signed as a member of the club’s reserve team.
Greenwood currently plies his trade for the Arsenal U-23 side, having been promoted to the reserve level earlier in the summer, following impressive performances for the U18 side. He was even training with the senior team in the pre-season preparations.
However, Greenwood was a notable absentee in Arsenal’s training session on Tuesday, along with fellow attacking prodigy, Folarin Balogun. And it seems a transfer to Leeds United is just around the corner as the youngster looks to make his mark under Marcelo Bielsa in the upcoming season.
Although Greenwood, as mentioned earlier, will be signed as a reserve team player this summer, his prospects at Elland Road is certainly far greater than they are at Arsenal, who have already found a winning formula under Mikel Arteta.
Leeds United, in contrast, have lack of productivity as one of their main issues heading into the new campaign. Patrick Bamford, their primary striker, is not deemed quality enough to thrive in the Premier League, with the Whites having no other reliable options, especially with Jean-Kevin Augustin returning to RB Leipzig in the summer.
Greenwood, in that regard, will be eyeing to make an impression by performing well for the Leeds’ U-23 during the early parts of the campaign and will be hopeful of a call-up to the senior side. However, the Yorkshire outfit has been linked with a move for Divock Origi in recent weeks.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will be disappointed to see Greenwood leave the club given the fact that the 18-year-old was touted as the next big thing to come out of its academy that has already produced quality talents like Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in recent years.
That being said, Arteta will be pretty happy with the bunch of young attackers at his disposal next season, including Eddie Nketiah, who returned from his loan spell at Leeds United in January.
He has shown a lot of promise and may earn a more prominent role in the first-team next season, especially if the Gunners do end up selling Alexandre Lacazette, who has been linked with a move to Juventus.
