Manchester City have joined the race to sign Liverpool target and Bayern Munich’s midfield sensation, Thiago Alcantara.

According to SportBild, as relayed by Daily Star, Liverpool could face a challenge on their hands as Manchester City join the race to Thiago Alcantara. The Bayern Munich midfielder has been a hot topic in the market over the past month or so, with the player facing an uncertain future at Bavaria.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Thiago, with numerous reports suggesting that the two parties have already agreed personal terms. However, Bayern Munich are not happy with the €30 million transfer fee the Reds have proposed as it falls way below the actual valuation of their star midfielder. And it has now put Manchester City on red alert.

The Sky Blues, coached by Pep Guardiola, who was Thiago’s mentor at FC Barcelona, are reportedly willing to pay more than Liverpool as they look to find a replacement for David Silva.

The ageing playmaker’s time at Etihad came to an end this summer and he has linked with a move to Lazio. His departure has already created a massive void in Manchester City’s creative department. And Thiago, in that regard, might be an ideal player to fill the shoes of the veteran Spanish international.

A product of the famed La Masia youth academy at Barcelona, Thiago has a close relationship with Guardiola and the duo has worked together not only in Catalonia but also at Bayern. He is quite familiar with Pep’s Juego de posicion style of play, thus making him a viable option for the Premier League giants.

It could serve as a major blow for Liverpool, however. The Reds seemed destined to Thiago a few weeks back, with the Spaniard being identified as an upgrade over Georginio Wijnaldum as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. His experience at the highest level of football could also aid Jurgen Klopp’s men, who could face stiff competition in the defence of their Premier League title next term.

Indeed, Thiago’s technical prowess could have added much more quality in Liverpool’s approach play. He could also be capable of providing the added creative substance as the Reds have recently appeared far too overreliant on the services of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, in terms of creativity.

But with Manchester City joining the race for the Bayern Munich sensation this summer, we might witness one of the most interesting sagas as the summer transfer window really gets underway.
