Arsenal are reportedly viewing former Manchester United star Memphis Depay as a potential replacement for Alexandre Lacazette.

According to a report by French outlet Le 10 Sport, Arsenal seem to be preparing for life without Alexandre Lacazette after the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights have identified former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay as a possible replacement, if the French striker leaves at the end of the season.

Depay has dramatically turned his career around since joining Lyon from Manchester United in January 2017. Now one of the best on show in Ligue 1, the 26-year-old has also played a key role in re-establishing Netherlands as one of the best European teams in international football.

While at Lyon, the former Manchester United forward has made 134 appearances, with a solid tally of 53 goals and 43 assists to show for his efforts. Having improved his output, the player’s demand in the transfer market has increased as well. Furthermore, it looks like Depay wishes to call it quits at Lyon, and Arsenal are hoping to pounce on the situation.

Arsenal are currently in a precarious position as far as options for the striker’s role are concerned. Mikel Arteta currently has Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah at his disposal for the sole centre-forward slot.

However, both Aubameyang and Lacazette have been linked with moves away from the Emirates. Lacazette, in particular, has endured a difficult season so far and could perhaps do with an exit. If either of them leave, Arsenal would need to bolster their attack for a second successive summer.

If both Aubameyang and Lacazette end up departing, Arteta would need to sign someone who has plenty of experience at the top level. Depay, to that end, appears to be a viable target for Arsenal, with the former Manchester United also showing leadership abilities for club and country in recent times.

The fact that he has just one year remaining on his deal with Lyon coupled with his desire to return to England means that Arsenal, who have previously targeted his teammate Moussa Dembele, ought to be in the driver’s seat in the race to sign him.

In addition, Depay could be available for a cut-price fee, which further makes him an appealing prospect for the Gunners. For now, what remains certain is that Arsenal are considering a move for the former Manchester United forward, who might well be returning to the Premier League this summer.
