Liverpool are interested in signing Thiago Alcantara, who has rebuffed a contract offer by Bayern Munich and could be on the move this summer.

According to a report by Sport Bild, Thiago Alcantara could be set to leave Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. The Spanish international has rejected a contract offer from the German champions, with his current deal set to expire in 12 months; and Liverpool are ready to pounce.

Thiago Alcantara has enjoyed a remarkable career, enjoying successful and trophy-laden spells with both Bayern Munich and first senior club Barcelona. A player who has won every single honour he has ever competed for at club level, the 29-year-old has lifted 22 trophies over the course of his career.

At Bayern, the Spanish international has had his fair share of injuries pegging him back, but he has still managed over 200 appearances and played a key role in their success. However, with just over one year remaining on his current deal, Thiago’s future has become a source of concern for Bayern. Furthermore, it has now emerged that he has rejected a new contract, which has piqued the interest of Liverpool.

Liverpool have been on a tear under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Premier League title this season. The Reds’ squad does appear to be quite complete, especially with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum playing their part in the club’s recent success.

However, with Adam Lallana set to leave at the end of the season, a spot is opening up in midfield. While Curtis Jones is one for the future, Liverpool could perhaps do with a creative option in the middle of the park, something Thiago can address if signed.

The 29-year-old will not only boost the creativity in midfield but also add steel in the middle of the park, fitting in well with Klopp’s style of play. And, having turned down the contract offer from Bayern, it looks like he could be on the move this summer, making him a viable target for Liverpool.

The report suggests that terms over a new deal had initially been agreed before Thiago backed off, perhaps with the thought of joining one more big club before his career reaches its twilight. A summer exit now appears to be likely, with Liverpool the favourites to sign him.

A return to Barcelona had also been briefly mooted a couple of months ago, but Liverpool seem to be the only club in Thiago’s pursuit. What now remains to be seen is if the Merseyside club launch the offensive for the 29-year-old and if they can reach an agreement over a transfer fee with Bayern.
