Chelsea have announced the signing of Timo Werner, confirming that they have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for his transfer.

Chelsea have made an official announcement to confirm that they have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to sign Timo Werner this summer. The German striker has agreed personal terms with the Blues and will join the Premier League heavyweights in July, once the Bundesliga season has ended.

Werner has been a hot property in the transfer market in recent months after a sensational 2019/20 campaign under the tutelage of Julian Nagelsmann, wherein has plundered 32 goals and 13 assists in 43 outings in all competitions.

26 of those goals have been netted in the Bundesliga, which puts him behind just Robert Lewandowski in the race to win the Torjagerkanone this season. His exploits have piqued the interest of several clubs, with Chelsea now winning the race to sign the 24-year-old.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Werner has been understandable, with Frank Lampard in the market for a striker. At present, the Blues’ boss has Tammy Abraham, Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud as options to lead the line for his side. But, while Abraham has stepped up admirably in the ongoing season, Batshuayi has proven to be unreliable.

Giroud, meanwhile, is only a backup option, meaning Lampard has needed to sign someone to provide competition to Abraham and maybe even be an upgrade. Hence, Werner was identified as a target earlier this year, when Chelsea established contact with Leipzig to scour for the possibility of landing him.

Earlier this month, it emerged that Chelsea had won the race to sign him as well, with reports claiming that the west Londoners had reached an agreement with Werner over a long-term deal, beating Liverpool to his signature. His capture has now been made official, with the Blues making him their second summer signing after Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea have confirmed that they have agreed personal terms with Werner while also having a consensus with Leipzig for a summer transfer. And, Werner expressed his delight at joining the Premier League heavyweights.

“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”

Interestingly, Werner will complete his move to Chelsea in July itself, as soon as the Bundesliga season is over, meaning he will not feature for Leipzig when the Champions League resumes in August.

The reliable Matt Law has provided more information on the transfer, with Werner signing a five-year, £170,000-a-week deal with Chelsea, who have paid £47.5 million for him. It will now be interesting to see if Werner can help transform the Blues into title contenders as they aim to take the next step in their evolution under Lampard.
