Real Madrid have reportedly rejected the chance to sign Chelsea star Willian on a free transfer once his contract expires at the end of the season.

According to a report from the Mirror, Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid have turned down the opportunity to recruit Chelsea and Brazil winger Willian on a free transfer this summer.

The 31-year-old has been with Chelsea since 2013, having arrived from Anzhi Makhachkala. During his time at the Stamford Bridge, Willian has grown into a key player under multiple managers and has won two Premier League titles, a League Cup, an FA Cup along with the UEFA Europa League title.

Willian has been an important player in Frank Lampard’s youthful side this season. So far in 2019/20, the Brazilian international has produced a return of 7 goals and 6 assists in 37 matches across all competitions. However, his future at the club has been a subject of intense transfer speculation for quite some time now.

Willian’s contract with Chelsea runs out at the end of the season. Talks have been held over a new deal, but the two parties haven’t been able to arrive at an agreement as of yet. This is mainly because they don’t see eye to eye on the duration of the new contract.

Given the situation, Real Madrid were sounded about the potential availability of the veteran winger, as per the aforementioned report. The Merengues though have decided to pass up the opportunity to land him, even though manager Zinedine Zidane is an admirer of the 69-time capped Brazilian international.

Real Madrid have plenty of options in the wide areas in Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, Lucas Vazquez, along with last summer’s marquee signing Eden Hazard. In addition, Zidane has also opted to use Isco on the flanks.

So, it makes sense that Los Blancos have decided to reject the chance to sign Willian, even though Bale has been linked with an exit. PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe remains Real Madrid’s primary target to reinforce their attack, while Liverpool’s Senegalese speedster Sadio Mane has also been mooted as an option.

Real Madrid are not the first club to have reportedly rejected the chance to secure Willian’s signing in the summer. Arch rivals Barcelona, who had been linked with him in January, also decided to pass up the chance to bring him in on a free transfer this summer.

Willian continues to court interest from Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 31-year-old. But as far as a transfer to Real Madrid is concerned, it seems like a no-go.
