Barcelona are reportedly interested in bringing Eric Garcia back and have had an enquiry as to the possibility of a summer transfer knocked back by Manchester City.

If a report from ESPN is to be believed, Eric Garcia could be heading back to Barcelona. The Manchester City youngster has emerged as a summer target for the Catalan giants, who have submitted an enquiry to the defending Premier League champions for the defender.

Eric Garcia’s situation at Manchester City might be a bit sketchy. Pep Guardiola is reportedly fond of the defender and wants the youngster involved in the first-team setup in the near future. But, Guardiola’s uncertain future seems to have created an opportunity Barcelona are reportedly looking to exploit.

Although, the report has added that Barcelona’s hopes were dashed quickly by Manchester City, who rejected the enquiry in swift fashion.

Barcelona-born Garcia spent nine years in the Catalans’ academy setup before moving to Manchester City in 2017. The Spanish youngster has somewhat managed to break through the youth ranks at Etihad, with 14 senior appearances registered for the Citizens; 6 of them coming in the 2019-20 Premier League.

In fact, Garcia has been one of the options Guardiola has opted to turn to amidst injuries and inconsistencies in the Manchester City backline this season.

Barcelona on the other hand, are looking for a new defensive option, with Samuel Umtiti reportedly up for sale. Gerard Pique is ageing faster than expected and will need to be rotated in order to get the best out of him. Quique Setien has only Clement Lenglet aside from Umtiti and Pique as reliable experienced options at the back.

There have been defenders linked with Barcelona. But, the Catalans have been majorly hit by the temporary break football had to take due to the world situation, which means they are likely to operate with a minimal budget largely dependent on player sales.

Bringing Eric Garcia back would solve the problem of spending millions on a centre-back. Garcia knows the club inside out and the footballing style at Manchester City is similar to the philosophy Barcelona have embodied over decades. Hence, the 19-year-old’s name was brought up while the two clubs were reportedly locked in talks over a potential swap deal involving Joao Cancelo and Nelson Semedo.

Garcia has the goods and has shown what he can offer Manchester City in long-term. But, if Guardiola leaves, the 19-year-old might be open to a return to his old hunting ground.
