Real Madrid are reportedly set to continue monitoring the progress of Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland with the Bundesliga returning to action.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid will continue keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland with the Bundesliga set to resume this weekend.

The German Bundesliga is set to become the first of the top-five European leagues to return to action, following the suspension of football due to the coronavirus pandemic. And, it will be Haaland’s Dortmund side that will be kicking things off with a Revierderby clash against FC Schalke 04.

Real Madrid are reportedly set to keep a close eye on the happenings in the Bundesliga, not only because of La Liga’s expected return next month, but also due to their strong interest in signing Dortmund striker Haaland.

The 19-year-old Norwegian has grown into one of the most prolific young strikers in Europe over the past year or so. His goalscoring prowess prompted Borussia Dortmund to snap him up from Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg in the January transfer window, beating competition from the likes of Manchester United.

Since joining the club, the teenage sensation has been in red-hot form, bagging 12 goals and 2 assists in 11 matches in all competitions. In total, for Dortmund and Salzburg combined in the 2019-20 campaign, Haaland has plundered a whopping 40 goals, while setting up 9 more in just 33 matches.

This brilliant form has put the Norwegian international on the radars of Real Madrid. The Merengues have been overly dependent on Karim Benzema for goals since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in the summer of 2018. But with Benzema well into his thirties, the club is need of a long-term replacement for the Frenchman.

While they signed Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, the Serb has failed to make the desired impact, scoring just two goals in 24 games so far in his stint at the Santiago Bernabeu. There have been speculations surrounding the future of the 22-year-old, although the club have insisted that he will not be sold.

Irrespective of Jovic’s future, Real Madrid are interested in securing Haaland’s signing in the future. The Spanish giants are aware that convincing Dortmund to sell the 19-year-old only months after signing him will be difficult and might require a mammoth transfer fee, something which might be unfeasible given the current circumstances due to the coronavirus crisis.

So, as per the aforementioned report, their plan is to make a move for the Norwegian in 2021, when his €75 million release clause will come into effect. For now, they will keep monitoring the progress of the teenage sensation with keen eyes.
