Borussia Dortmund have identified Chelsea’s academy sensation Charlie Webster as their latest target.

According to The Sun, Borussia Dortmund are hoping to sign Chelsea’s Charlie Webster in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Bundesliga giants believe that the youngster has a lot of potential and could be the next Jadon Sancho.

Chelsea could be willing to send Webster to Germany in search of more game-time and an opportunity to gain some exposure at the highest level football. As a result, the Black and Yellows are on red alert and could make a move this summer.

Webster is indeed regarded as one of the most talented players in the Chelsea academy, notably being voted as the player of the tournament in the Kevin de Bruyne U15 Cup in Belgium last season. He has also played for the England U16 and U17 sides, becoming an asset in the Chelsea youth team.

As far as his style of play is concerned, Webster has impressed the onlookers with his pace on the flanks. Much like Sancho, he is blessed quick-feet that enables him to work his way through tight spaces. In addition, the youngster can thread in crosses from the wider areas of the pitch, thus being an excellent source of creativity.

A move to Borussia Dortmund could be an ideal move for Webster this summer as the Ruhrpott are unsure whether they can keep hold of Sancho. The English international has been courted by a number of clubs across Europe and his potential destination next season has been a subject of some broad discussion.

Nevertheless, Dortmund are never shy of giving their youngsters an opportunity and Webster should be no different. However, the 16-year-old will have to prove himself in the youth leagues, where he could face significant competition.

As for Chelsea, they are notoriously known for their tendency to loan out youth players. In recent years, however, a lot of players, who have impressed in their loan spells away from Stamford Bridge, have found success in the Chelsea first-team, including Tammy Abraham and Reece James.

Especially under Frank Lampard, the club is now willing to rely on young individuals. It is, however, fair to point out that Dortmund won’t fancy signing Webster unless the Blues are ready to permanently sell their prized academy asset. So it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga takes shape within the coming months.
