Arsenal are reportedly set to battle Manchester United and other clubs in pursuit of Wissam Ben Yedder in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by French publication L’Equipe, Arsenal and Manchester United are among the clubs that could engage in a transfer scuffle for Wissam Ben Yedder in the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old French international is valued at around £40 million by AS Monaco.

Wissam Ben Yedder joined AS Monaco from Sevilla last summer and has made a stunning impact for the Principality club. Perhaps the single most influential figure for the former French champions in the 2019-20 season, the player has 18 goals and 7 assists in 26 Ligue 1 outings.

Those 18 goals also make the French international the joint-top scorer in the French top-flight this season along with Kylian Mbappe. However, his immediate impact for Monaco has alerted several top clubs across Europe, with Arsenal and Manhester United among those showing an interest in the 29-year-old.

Arsenal are in a precarious position right now, owing to the uncertain future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has coincidentally been linked with Manchester United as well. The Gunners’ captain has a little over one year left on his current deal and talks over a renewal between the two parties have reached a head.

If Aubameyang ends up leaving, Arsenal need to sign a replacement, making Ben Yedder a viable target, especially considering he will cost a rather economical £40 million. Manchester United, on the other hand, are required to sign someone like Ben Yedder for some other purpose.

Marcus Rashford has been on fire this term while Anthony Martial has enjoyed a decent campaign as well. Odion Ighalo has proven to be a superb backup option since joining on loan in January while Mason Greenwood has made waves in his first full season as a senior Manchester United player.

Ighalo has been touted to join Manchester United permanently this summer. But, in case they do not, the Red Devils will need to sign someone else to provide competition to Martial in the short-term, till Greenwood is regarded as ready to become a regular striker. To that end, Ben Yedder is someone who can be a suitable alternative to both Ighalo and Arsenal captain Aubameyang.

French striker Alassane Plea has also been named as a target for Manchester United, but Ben Yedder would be a better fit. United and Arsenal, though, will also need to fend off competition from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Valencia, especially with his £40 million making the 29-year-old an attractive prospect.

With so many clubs tailing Ben Yedder, regular game time and Champions League football are likely to become huge factors in determining his final decision. And, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the French international, with Manchester United and Arsenal among a whole host of clubs after him.
