Arsenal have shifted their focus towards Eder Militao in an attempt to bolster their defence.

According to a report published by Daily Mail, Arsenal are considering a move for Real Madrid defender Eder Militao who has had a tough first year in Spain.

Militao was regarded as one of the best prospects in his position before Los Blancos signed him for €50 million in 2019. However, he has had a torrid time this season, playing third-choice in Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid.

The 22-year-old has featured only 9 times in La Liga and has managed to managed to conjure 2 clean sheets in that time. Miliato’s last appearance came in a 2-1 defeat to Real Betis where he started as a right back to fill for an injured Dani Carvajal.

This might be chance for Madrid to cash in on Militao who is still rated highly, and can easily slot into the starting spots of many top clubs. Arsenal are one of the clubs who have joined the chase for the Brazilian. The Gunners will face competition from crosstown rivals Tottenham Hotspur who have been linked to the 22-year-old in the recent past.

Arsenal have been looking for defensive reinforcements ahead of the next season to try to freshen up their backline. Mikel Arteta has to make do with players like David Luiz, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi who are way too prone to errors even if the latter has shown a bit of a resurgence in 2020.

Also on Arsenal payroll are the constantly-injured Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, who, in fact are their best defenders. Arteta added Pablo Mari to his arsenal in the winter, but the 26-year-old has played only two games since signing.

The Spaniard endured a slow start to life at the Emirates due to fitness issues, but seems to have impressed the coaches, and is set to earn a permanent move to England. He’s defensively solid and a good passer, which is bound to make him a starter.

Another man who is set to oust one of Sokratis and Luiz in Arteta’s backline is William Saliba, who will return from his year-long loan stint from St. Etienne in the summer. If the transfer for Militao somehow goes through, it may result in the club offloading two centre-halves at the least.

Arsenal’s defensive woes have been the highlight of their campaign for several years, even if they’ve been defending slightly better under Arteta. Having said that, Arsenal can still do with a quality addition like Militao at the heart of their defence.
