Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a shock summer move for Manuel Neuer, with the veteran German viewed as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

According to a report by German publication Bild, Chelsea have set their sights on Manuel Neuer as they continue their search for a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga. The German international is at an impasse with Bayern Munich over a new deal, with his current contract set to run out next year.

Neuer has become a bonafide legend of German football since making the switch from Schalke to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2011. Over the last decade, the veteran goalkeeper has been an ever-present between the sticks for both club and country, playing a major role in both Bayern and Germany’s dominance at club and international levels, respectively.

During his illustrious career, Neuer has gone on to win as many as 20 trophies, amassing nearly 100 appearances for Germany while turning out over 350 times for Bayern Munich. However, the 34-year-old could be nearing the end of the line at Bayern, especially with his deal at the Allianz Arena running out next summer. And, Chelsea are looking to pounce, as a result.

Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a goalkeeper this summer, with Frank Lampard left unconvinced by Kepa Arrizabalaga. In fact, for a month or so, the Spaniard was relegated to the bench, with deputy goalkeeper Willy Caballero being preferred by the Chelsea boss.

As a result, reports suggested that Kepa could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer, with former club Athletic Bilbao linked with a move for the Spanish international. Conversely, the Blues have considered several goalkeepers to replace Kepa.

One such goalkeeper is German custodian Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Now, though, ter Stegen’s compatriot, Neuer has also emerged on the radar of Chelsea. The 34-year-old, however, is a rather surprising target, considering he is in the twilight of his career.

Instead, someone like Jan Oblak, who has been suggested as a viable target by Graeme Souness, would be an ideal option for Chelsea, with the Slovenian at the peak of his powers. Neuer, on the other hand, would only be a short-term solution for the west Londoners, who would have to enter the market for another goalkeeper soon.

Nevertheless, with Neuer at odds with Bayern Munich over a new deal, a summer move away from Allianz Arena could be a possibility. In such a scenario, it will be interesting to see if a switch to Chelsea sees the light of the day for the German interenational.
