Chelsea place their finger on Moussa Dembele as a priority signing to improve their attacking unit ahead of next season.

As per a report published by The Sun, Chelsea are in the market to sign a striker who can work in rotation with Tammy Abraham, and Frank Lampard is looking to bring in Olympique Lyonnais ace Moussa Dembele.

The West London club had identified Timo Werner as their first priority this summer to improve their offensive unit, but have conceded defeat after learning he’s Liverpool bound.

During his time in Scotland with Celtic, Dembele had attracted a lot of attention from foreign clubs as the perfect striker for a counter-attacking system. Eventually, the Frenchman moved to Lyon in a €22 million move in 2018 and has thrived at his new club.

The 23-year-old is the second top-scorer in the French league this campaign with 16 goals. He’s already crossed his entire tally from last season. However, Lyon sit 7th in the table, and might miss out on any European football for 2020/21. And because of that, they might be forced to cash in on Dembele.

The desire to go after Dembele only arises after Lampard and co. learnt about Werner’s desire to join Liverpool. Speaking to ViaSportFootball, the German said, “Yes I know that Liverpool is the best team in the world at the moment. When you’re linked with that team it makes you very proud but in case of that, it’s a pleasure, but I know Liverpool have a lot of good players.”

In the same interview, he referred to Jurgen Klopp as the best coach in the world, and while that seems to be the popular opinion right now, Lampard has impressed in his first season given his resources.

Chelsea were given a two-window transfer ban after last season ended. Due to that, the English manager had to bring in reinforcements from the youth team, whom he had worked with or observed closely in the Championship last season. This included Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

And while these youngsters have taken the responsibility and carried this team to a possible podium finish, Chelsea need to bring in some experienced men if they want to make a push for the title, or come close to it. Moussa Dembele seems to be a player who suits Lampard’s style and could work well with Abraham.

Dembele still has three years left on his current contract with Lyon. It remains to be seen if Chelsea decide to act on their interest in the 23-year-old in the upcoming summer or turn their attentions elsewhere.
