Dean Henderson is reportedly set to be offered a new contract worth £100,000 per week by Manchester United amid interest from Chelsea.
According to a report by The Sun, Dean Henderson is subject to a contract upgrade by Manchester United. This renewal, worth £100,000 per week, will be the third that will be handed to the Sheffield United loanee, who is also attracting interest from Chelsea.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge owing to record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga’s poor form this season. Frank Lampard was quick to replace the Spaniard with Willy Caballero, but needs to think of a long-term replacement if he remains unconvinced by Kepa.
The young Englishman is a Manchester United academy product, but has been sent on consecutive loans since July, 2015. The Red Devils have not felt the need for Henderson with David de Gea being the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford. But, it seems as if inconsistency and errors have caught up with de Gea, who has been rather mediocre this season.
Henderson, on the other hand, seems to have the world at his feet at the moment. Under his guard, Sheffield UNited have conceded the second least goals in the current Premier League campaign, second only to Liverpool. Henderson has also registered 10 clean sheets, with only Nick Pope keeping more shut outs.
However, the youngster’s form means Manchester United want to lock him down for another year atleast, seeing as Henderson could very well turn out to be de Gea’s successor soon enough. This idea plays well into Chris Wilder’s plan of keeping the Englishman at the club – even if it is temporarily.
If Sheffield United were to go after Henderson, they would likely be locked in a bidding war with Chelsea who are hoping a £50 million offer seals the transfer. However, getting the 23-year-old on loan is a better idea for the Blades till they find a suitable replacement.
Henderson is locked down at United for two more years at the very least, and a new contract would mean his stay at parent club Manchester United would extend further. This deal could go either way, but if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a potentially world class goalkeeper to replace an established elite keeper, he should not look any further than one of United’s own.
