Chelsea are reportedly interested in soon-to-be out of contract Angel Gomes and are plotting a shock free transfer for the Manchester United wonderkid.

British publication Metro claim Chelsea are hatching a surprise transfer plan for Manchester United wonderkid Angel Gomes. The youngster is set to be out of contract in the summer and is being lined up by the Blues as a free transfer.

Angel Gomes has long been labelled a wonderkid and one of the best talents to emerge from the Manchester United academy setup. There was an expectation from fans and the camp alike that the midfielder would see first-team action under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Yet, Gomes has seen Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong and Brandon Williams rake in more appearances this season and impress the fans. The 18-year-old, along with Chong, were holding out on signing an extension. But, the Dutch international has since gone on to sign a new deal at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer iterated in the press that Manchester United want to keep Angel Gomes and are trying to tie him down to a new long-term contract. But, the English youth international is yet to sign anything, which piqued the interest of Barcelona earlier  and has now made him a shock target for Chelsea.

Frank Lampard has brought about a youth revolution at Chelsea, mostly thanks to the club’s transfer ban, which was lifted before the January window. We have seen the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James become household names in the first-team setup.

But, the one name that seems to have impressed the most is Billy Gilmour. The youngster, who was brought in from Rangers, was one of the heroes for Chelsea in their win over Liverpool in the FA Cup and also impressed in the Premier League win over Everton.

Gilmour’s rise could be shown as an example for Gomes, whose path has been further made harder by the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, who operates the same positions as the youngster.

Manchester United rate Angel Gomes highly and are unlikely to let him leave without much of a fight. But, if somehow Chelsea are able to clutch Gomes away from the Red Devils, it would be a massive swoop considering how much hype there is for Gomes within the fanbase.
