Manchester United and Manchester City are reportedly set for a transfer tussle in the summer transfer window, for the signing of Tottenham star Harry Kane.

As per an exclusive report from 90min.com, arch-rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are primed to go to battle for the signing of Tottenham superstar and England captain Harry Kane in the summer transfer window.

Reports last week emerged claiming that Kane, a product of the Tottenham youth academy, is looking for an exit in the summer, as he seeks to make a step up in his career and challenge for trophies at domestic and continental levels. Naturally, the rumour mill was buzzing with speculations over where the England captain might end up next season.

Manchester United, who have been long-time admirers of the striker, were one of the first clubs to be mentioned as Kane’s next destination, with the player himself believed to be open to a switch to Old Trafford.

Having sold Romelu Lukaku last summer, Manchester United had problems in the centre-forward department this term, especially after Marcus Rashford was ruled out injured. However, Anthony Martial has stepped up admirably in recent games, while on-loan striker Odion Ighalo has also shown that he can be of value and youngster Mason Greenwood has impressed as well.

But, another marquee striker like Kane would go a long way in bridging the gap between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and the top two of the Premier League – Liverpool and Manchester City. However, they might have to rejig their transfer plans, with huge outlays already planned for the potential arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and teenage sensation Jude Bellingham.

Manchester United will have to battle local rivals Manchester City if they are to sign Kane in the summer. The reigning Premier League champions have suffered a disappointing campaign by their usual standards, falling well behind Liverpool in the title race. There have been sounds of a potential rebuild doing the rounds at the Etihad.

And the centre-forward department is something that Pep Guardiola might look to add to, with star striker and all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero not getting any younger. Gabriel Jesus has proven to be an able deputy, but still seems to be lacking that consistency to become the premier striker that Manchester City need, explaining their interest in Kane.

However, the two-year European football ban imposed by UEFA on Manchester City might play spoilsport in their pursuit of the Tottenham Hotspur superstar.

Kane has established himself as one of the most lethal marksmen in Europe over the past half-a-decade, scoring 181 goals in 278 appearances for Tottenham. The 26-year-old had made a solid start to the 2019-20 campaign, bagging 17 goals in 25 matches, before picking up a thigh injury that has potentially ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Kane still has over four years left on his contract with Tottenham, meaning chairman Daniel Levy will ensure that he extracts a monumental fee, touted to be around £150 million, for the striker, should he decide to leave. It will be interesting to see whether the England captain does force an exit from North London with both the Manchester clubs lining up for his signing.
