Manchester City are reportedly looking to sign Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry as part of a swap deal involving Leroy Sane.
According to The Sun, Bayern Munich remain interested in Leroy Sane, but Manchester City want a player in return. The Premier League champions are considering a swap deal for Sane involving former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry.
Gnabry moved to Werder Bremen in the summer of 2016 from Arsenal. He made his national team debut in the same year after a solid start with Bremen. It is during his spell at Bremen when he caught the eye of Bavarian giants Bayern Munich and moved to the Allianz Arena in a €8 million deal.
Gnabry was immediately sent to loan to Hoffenheim for one season, where he scored 10 goals in 22 appearances. He has become a regular for Bayern since, and has scored 19 goals in 50 outings. The 24-year-old has 9 goals and 6 assists in the Bundesliga this term, already matching his overall tally from last season. But, he might now be on his way to Manchester City as part of a deal to sign Leroy Sane.
Bayern have tried to sign Sane from City previously, including the summer transfer window before the current season started. The Bundesliga champions, though, failed in their pursuit of the German winger after he was rendered a long-term absentee with an ACL injury.
However, they still seem eager to sign him, and there is only so little Pep Guardiola can do about it. Nonetheless, getting Gnabry in a transfer swap could sweeten the deal for the English champions, as the former Arsenal winger can fit in perfectly in the void Sane would leave.
This deal, in theory, sounds like a win situation only for Manchester City. As of now, Bayern have three wingers, including Gnabry. The other two are Ivan Perisic, on loan from Inter Milan and the injury prone Kinglsey Coman. They have been using Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho as makeshift wingers, at times.
However, Bayern will still need to buy more wingers if this deal goes through. The other problem that precedes this deal is that as of now Manchester City have been banned from playing European competitions, and this could seem like a step down for Gnabry’s career.
There is little to no chance of this deal actually happening amidst all the chaos that has been brought down at the home of the English champions. However, Bayern would have to pay a little sum – nearly €20 million – on top of this swap to make the transfer successful, and it remains to be seen if the deal involving the former Arsenal star sees the light of the day.
