Manchester United are reportedly interested in Eric Dier, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considering the prospect of bringing the Tottenham star in during the summer.

Daily Star report that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning his summer spending spree and Eric Dier is one of the names on the list. The Manchester United boss is reportedly keen on the Tottenham man and is ready to reignite interest in the midfielder in the summer.

Eric Dier has had a long history of being linked with Manchester United, right from the days of Jose Mourinho, who is now his manager at Tottenham. Since Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Dier’s involvement has somewhat increased, with the midfielder not getting in many appearances under his belt earlier in the 2019-20 season under Mauricio Pochettino.

But, of late, Mourinho has chosen to go with the likes of Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Eriksen over Dier. While this may stem from the need to have more attack minded players in the squad to cover for Harry Kane’s injury, things became a bit clearer when Mourinho chose not to start Dier in a game he set up defensively for in the 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Thus, with his diminishing role at Tottenham, Manchester United might present the perfect opportunity in the summer. For Manchester United, it is simply a case of building the squad piece-by-piece under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has done the oh-so-strenous task of clearing the deadwood to a great extent.

Scott McTominay and Fred have been revelations in midfield while Nemanja Matic has done his part. Paul Pogba continues to be linked with a move away from the club while being on the sidelines and Andreas Pereira hasn’t shown the consistency to prove he is good enough for Manchester United.

While Bruno Fernandes has been brought in to deal with the lack of creativity, push and attacking intent at number 10, making him essentially a replacement for what Pogba did, United will also need a replacement for Matic in the summer.

Dier has the perfect attributes of a holding midfielder and will also enable Solskjaer to rotate between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 whenever necessary. The fact that Dier can also play as a central defender if the need be is something that will also entice Solskjaer. A boyhood Manchester United fan, Dier would also fit the profile of players Solskjaer wants to bring in that would want to play for the club and the badge.

Any possibility of development in this story will entirely depend on how Dier does at Tottenham for the rest of the season; for he also reserves high amount of respect and admiration for current boss Jose Mourinho.
