Liverpool are reportedly set to head-to-head with Chelsea in pursuit of Timo Werner, who is valued at £60 million by RB Leipzig.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Liverpool are set to wage a transfer battle with Chelsea in the race to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. Chelsea have already opened negotiations over a January move for the German international, who has a £60 million price tag.

Werner has been one of the best forwards on display in Bundesliga for some years now. However, it is the appointment of Julian Nagelsmann as the new RB Leipzig manager and his subsequent tactics that have brought the best out of the German striker.

In the form of his life, Werner is leading the charge for Leipzig in their push for the Bundesliga title, with 20 goals in 18 league games making him the joint-top scorer in the German top-flight. With 5 further goals and 10 assists in 8 other games in all competitions, the 23-year-old is simply irresistible right now and has piqued the interest of Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea are reportedly planning plenty of moves after their transfer ban was lifted by CAS. Attack seems to be one of the priority areas for the Blues, with Werner reportedly a target for the January window. Tammy Abraham has started most games for Chelsea, but with games coming thick and fast, Frank Lampard ought to have another top class striker at his disposal.

Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud are both reportedly eager to leave Chelsea and with Werner also adept at playing on the flanks, he is a viable target for the West Londoners. The interest from Liverpool, though, comes as a bit of a surprise.

Liverpool already have Roberto Firmino going great guns, with backup striker Divock Origi proving to be quite an asset for the club over the past year or so. With Rhian Brewster waiting in the wings and the wide areas sufficiently bolstered, there really is no reason to sign Werner, especially in the wake of Takumi Minamino’s arrival at Anfield.

Perhaps, with that mind, Werner has previously been advised not to join Liverpool by former boss Ralf Rangnick. Liverpool, though, will need to move quickly if they are serious over their interest in Werner, with Chelsea reportedly beginning negotiations with Leipzig, who value the player at £60 million, to secure his services this month.

Jurgen Klopp initially wanted to wait till the summer to make a move for Werner, but will now have to accelerate the process. However, Liverpool and Chelsea alike might be forced to keep their chase for the German international on hold till after the end of the season.

RB Leipzig want to keep hold of their prized possession till the summer, amid their bid for the Bundesliga title. As a result, it is likely that Werner’s possible exit from the club will unlikely happen this month, although it remains to be seen if Chelsea or Liverpool can do anything to secure his services in the current window.
