Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly among five clubs that are chasing the signature of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

According to reputed Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Sandro Tonali is being chased by a number of top clubs across Europe, with Juventus leading the race to sign him. The Bianconeri have also been joined by Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester United, among a couple of other suitors.

Tonali is a player who has been regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in the world ever since he broke into the Brescia first-team setup in the 2017-18 season. Since then, he has grown leaps and bounds, first playing a key role in the Lombardi club’s promotion seeking campaign last term before making grade in the Italian national side.

The current season has been Tonali’s first in Serie A, but he has continued to impress, even scoring one of the goals of the season back in October. His exploits have invariably caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Liverpool and Manchester United now joining the race to sign him.

Liverpool’s interest in Tonali could be driven by the fact that Adam Lallana faces an uncertain future at Anfield. Much like Lallana, Georginio Wijnaldum’s future at the club is not set in stone either, while James Milner is in the twilight of his career. As a result, Tonali is a viable target for Liverpool.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are in serious need of midfield additions, with the current options leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a little light. In particular, United lack a player who can hold the fort in front of defence while also playing a key role in build-up play.

While Nemanja Matic has done well in the chances afforded to him this term, it is clear that he is nearing the end of his time at Manchester United, which would entail the recruitment of a replacement. To that end, United have been linked with a move for Marcos Llorente, with Tonali now emerging as a possible alternative.

Manchester United and Liverpool, though, face stiff competition from Manchester City, Juventus and PSG, with Juventus named as the leaders in the race to sign the teenage prodigy. Meanwhile, a €50 million transfer fee has been quoted in the report, although the stance of the suitors towards the valuation remains unknown.

For now, it is clear that the star of Sandro Tonali is rightly soaring, with Liverpool and Manchester United joining the race to sign him. It now remains to be seen if either Premier League club can prevail in his pursuit, with Juventus currently ahead of both clubs.
