Bayern Munich are reportedly set to join Real Madrid in their pursuit of Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window.

As per a report from German publication SPORT1, as carried by the Mirror, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are plotting a cut-price January move for Tottenham Hotspur superstar Christian Eriksen. The Danish playmaker is also being chased by La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid.

Eriksen, who is in the final year of his contract with Tottenham, seems keen to end his six-year association with the club. Having arrived from Ajax in 2013, the 27-year-old has developed into one of the finest playmakers during his time in London, along the way helping Spurs become a force to be reckoned with.

Eriksen aired his wishes of moving on from Tottenham during the summer transfer window, as he sought a new challenge in his career. And while there were widespread reports of interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United, no move materialized, leading to the Dane staying put with the Lilywhites.

But, the midfielder has just nine months left on his current contract and has shown no intention of signing an extension. This has prompted Spurs to decide to cash in on him in January, with the North Londoners reportedly looking for a transfer fee in the region of €20-€25 million.

This situation has led to Real Madrid weighing up the possibility of signing Eriksen in January. The Merengues had been linked with the Danish superstar in the summer, but prioritised a move for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba instead, which also fell through.

With Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane keen on adding another creative midfielder to his side, Eriksen would be the ideal fit as he is entering the peak years of his career and will be available for a bargain price. The midfielder is also believed to be preferring a move to Spain, which could see the deal happen in the winter transfer window.

However, as per the report from SPORT1, Bayern Munich have also thrown their hat in the ring to sign Eriksen from Tottenham, complicating things for Real Madrid. The report states that Die Roten have already established contact with the Premier League playmaker’s representatives and have received positive feedback from the player.

Given the wealth of options that Bayern Munich have in their attack and midfield departments, it will be interesting to see where Eriksen would fit into the scheme of things under manager Niko Kovac. But, considering the calibre of the player and the cut-price fee that he is likely to command, the German champions would definitely stand to benefit from signing the 27-year-old.

Eriksen has made 288 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 67 goals and assisting 87 more. However, the Dane has struggled to perform at his usual level this season, managing a solitary goal and assist so far in ten matches. It certainly seems like his time at Tottenham is nearing an end. But, it remains to be seen if he ends up joining Bayern or Real Madrid.
