Real Madrid are reportedly looking to agree a pre-contract agreement with 27-year-old playmaker Christian Eriksen, who is in the final year of his Tottenham deal.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Real Madrid are taking steps to ensure that they secure the services of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer next summer. The Spanish heavyweights are hoping to reach an agreement with the Danish playmaker, whose Tottenham deal runs out post the end of the season, over a pre-contract in January.

The Christian Eriksen saga has dragged on for well over a year now. A case similar to the one that David de Gea was embroiled in, Tottenham have been attempting to tie the 27-year-old down to a bumper new deal, worth £200,000 per week.

But, while the contract would put him at par with Harry Kane to be Tottenham’s highest paid player, the Dane does not seem to be interested in committing his future to the North Londoners. Eriksen already iterated this past summer that he is keen on embarking on a new challenge, comments that piqued the interest of several clubs and most notably, Real Madrid.

Zinedine Zidane revamped his squad rather efficiently in the summer, bolstering just about every department. But, one area that has been left unaddressed by the Real Madrid boss, for one reason or another, is midfield, which is now proving to be a concern.

Luka Modric and Isco have been sidelined with injuries early into the season, leaving Zidane down to his bare bones in midfield options. Add to it the fact that Modric is in the final stages of his career, and it is clear that Real Madrid ought to prioritise the addition of a creative midfielder the next time they enter the transfer market.

To that end, Eriksen had been a target for Los Blancos till the late stages of the summer window, as were a few other midfielders. But, in the end, Real Madrid were unable to land either the playmaker on any of their other midfield targets. Now, though, they are ready to make amends and seem to have reignited their interest in Eriksen.

The La Liga giants are waiting to make their move for Eriksen till January, when they hope to reach an agreement with the 27-year-old over a pre-contract for a summer move. Indeed, the player can engage in discussions with foreign clubs for a pre-contract to seal a free transfer upon the turn of the year, seeing as his Tottenham deal runs out in the summer.

Real Madrid would hope to stave off competition from Manchester United, who have been mentioned as possible suitors in lieu of a January move. In the end, though, any move will depend on the player’s wishes, although a mid-season move may prove to be difficult for United to execute.
