David de Gea has committed his long-term future to Manchester United, signing a new contract till the summer of 2023, the club confirmed on Monday.

Manchester United have made an official statement to confirm that they have tied David de Gea down to a new long-term deal. The Spanish international has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract that will see him remain at Old Trafford until June 2023, with the Premier League giants also having the option to extend it by a further year.

David de Gea has gone on to become one of the best goalkeepers in world football since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2011. Arguably United’s best player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, de Gea’s future has been the subject of intense speculation while also being a concern for Manchester United fans over the last one year.

The 28-year-old’s deal with the Red Devils was set to run out at the end of the 2019-20 season, although reports in the summer had iterated that he was poised to sign a bumper new deal with United. But, with de Gea entering the final year of his contract, tensions had been mounting as to whether he would ever get around to signing a renewal.

There were even suggestions that Juventus were hoping to poach him away from Manchester United on a free transfer. But, the speculation has now been put to a rest for good.

Manchester United have tied de Gea down to a new four-year deal, which will see him earn between £350,000 and £375,000 per week, as per Sky Sports, making the Spanish international the world’s highest paid goalkeeper.

The figure is quite a bit higher from recent reports surrounding his renewal. Nevertheless, the news will come as a boost for Manchester United, who have secured the long-term future of one of their most important players. Upon signing the deal, de Gea expressed his happiness at continuing with the Red Devils.

“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour. Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”

Manchester United fans would now hope de Gea can rediscover his best form, having struggled to a great extent last season. For now, the 28-year-old is primed to play for Manchester United well into his thirties and complete ten years with the club.
