Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian is reportedly set for a 2020 summer departure from Old Trafford, with Inter Milan poised to sign him.

According to a report by Italian outlet Rai Sport, as carried out by Football Italia, Matteo Darmian is primed to end his frustrations at Manchester United in the summer of 2020. The Italian defender will complete his departure from Old Trafford next year, with Inter Milan set to secure his services on a free transfer.

Darmian joined Manchester United from Torino in the summer of 2015, with Louis van Gaal not having much faith in Rafael. The Italian ended up replacing Rafael at Old Trafford, with 39 appearances across all competitions. But, since then, it has been a tale of frustration and misery for the 29-year-old at Old Trafford.

In the last three seasons, Darmian has turned out just 53 times for Manchester United, with only 18 starts in the last couple of campaigns. As a result, it has become plainly clear that the player is surplus to requirements at the Premier League club, although they have found it tough to offload him in recent transfer windows.

Most of the interest in the full-back has surfaced from his homeland, with Juventus being linked quite heavily with him for the last year or so. But, the Bianconeri now seem to have ceded interest in Darmian, although Manchester United might finally get him off their books.

According to Rai Sport (h/t Football Italia), Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Darmian over a departure from Old Trafford, albeit for the summer of 2020. That is when the Italian defender’s contract with Manchester United expires, meaning the Nerazzurri will pay nothing to acquire his services.

Inter do seem to be in need of versatile options to play out wide as wing-backs in Antonio Conte’s system. Dalbert has failed to impress Conte while Federico Dimarco has been linked with a move away from San Siro. As a result, Darmian has emerged as a viable target, albeit one that will only be an option next season.

Add to it, the fact that the 29-year-old can also play in a back-three, and he could be quite an asset for Conte. But, the deal might not be in the best interests of Manchester United, who will recoup nothing in exchange of Darmian’s services, although if the report is anything to go by, the free transfer looks like a done deal and it remains to be seen if that indeed is the case next summer.
