Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is reportedly closing in on a deadline day loan switch to fellow Premier League club Burnley.

According to reliable English journalist Matt Law, Chelsea are finally going to get their hands off of Danny Drinkwater, albeit temporarily. Fellow Premier League club Burnley are on the verge of signing the former Leicester City midfielder on a season-long loan deal.

It has been a nightmarish move for Danny Drinkwater ever since he decided to call it quits at Leicester City. The switch to Chelsea has seen his career hit a roadblock, with the 29-year-old starting a mere 12 games for the Blues in the two years that he has been at Stamford Bridge.

With Frank Lampard now in-charge at the West London club, things have not taken a turn for the better. Mason Mount, who has returned from a loan spell at Derby County, seems to have usurped him, having also penned a new contract with Chelsea. With a number of midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order, a summer departure has seemed to be the best way out for Drinkwater.

Reports this week had suggested that Norwich City were weighing up a move for the out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder. But, the Canaries have since gone on to sign Ibrahim Amadou instead and are unlikely to make a move for another central midfielder.

Now though, with the British transfer deadline mere hours away, a resolution seems to have been reached. Burnley are set to swoop Drinkwater away from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal, and a move for the 29-year-old does make some sense.

The Clarets were already not brimming with options for the middle of the park and they have found themselves in a bit of a predicament ahead of the start of the season. Jack Cork has picked up a hip injury while Steven Defour is out for the foreseeable future.

Defour’s absence, in particular, leaves Sean Dyche in a bit of bother, with Cork, Ashley Westwood and Jeff Hendrick the only natural central midfield options. As a result, Drinkwater has emerged as a viable late target, whose status at Chelsea could help Burnley clinch a quick deal.

As per Matt Law, the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement over a season-long loan deal and it remains to be seen if it can be moved over the line before the 5:00 pm deadline. For Drinkwater though, the move represents a chance to resurrect a stuttering career, following his struggles with Chelsea.
