Real Madrid are reportedly increasingly confident of landing Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba this summer.

According to a report by ESPN, Real Madrid are fancying their chances of securing the services of Paul Pogba within this summer’s transfer window. The French midfielder is admittedly open to the idea of leaving Manchester United to embark on a new challenge.

It has been a strange homecoming for Paul Pogba at Manchester United. While he has arguably been United’s best player in the three years since his return, the fact that he has been embroiled in a few controversies has been a dampener of sorts. Nevertheless, his importance to the side cannot be underestimated.

However, the Red Devils would have been on the edge ever since Pogba iterated that he is ready for a new challenge, alluding towards wanting a summer exit. The player’s comments have since been corroborated by his agent Mino Raiola, who has publicly expressed his client’s desire for a move away from Manchester United, in the wake of interest from Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have been hard at work this summer to overhaul an ageing, underperforming squad. But, one department that remains unaddressed is midfield, especially seeing as Luka Modric is fast approaching the end of his career, while Toni Kroos seems to have regressed as well. As a result, the interest in Pogba makes sense for Real Madrid.

Manchester United though, are prepared to fight tooth and nail to keep hold of their talisman and are reportedly looking to open contract talks with him. But, the fact that Pogba has also admitted to his wish to work under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid only adds to United’s worries.

Add to it the fact that Real Madrid are reportedly willing to offer him a lucrative contract and the Premier League heavyweights cannot rest easy. And, the report suggests that the Merengues are confident about their prospects of signing Pogba this summer, despite Zidane’s recent comments pointing towards the formulation of a deal being a “tough” prospect.

While Manchester United have slapped a €180 million price tag on Pogba, the La Liga giants are confident of reaching an agreement with them over a deal. But, there is a major obstacle in their path, with the transfer window set to slam shut on August 8.

English clubs can still sell their players till August 31, but Manchester United will block any move for Pogba beyond August 8 if they are unable to sign a replacement before the deadline. As things stand, a move for the 26-year-old looks unlikely for Real Madrid.

Less than two weeks remain for the summer transfer window to close down in England. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United are able to make midfield reinforcements, to possibly pave the way for Paul Pogba to join Real Madrid.
