Manchester United have reportedly failed in their hijack attempt to sign Idrissa Gueye, who is set to join PSG in a  €32 million deal.

According to a report by French publication L’Equipe, Manchester United made a late attempt to steal a march on PSG for Idrissa Gueye. The Everton midfielder though, is closing in on joining PSG in a €32 million, with the move set to be formally completed next week.

Gueye has forged a reputation of being a reliable figure in the middle of the park when it comes to fulfilling the duties of being a holding midfielder. The Senegalese midfielder was a shining light in his maiden Premier League campaign in 2015-16, even as Aston Villa dropped down to the Championship.

Upon making the move to Everton in the subsequent summer, the 29-year-old has continued to embark on his upward trajectory, being a constant in the Toffees’ midfield through all the chopping and changing. But, ever since the January transfer window, Gueye’s future at Goodison Park has been uncertain.

PSG had been heavily linked with him back in the winter before Everton managed to keep hold of the midfielder. But, the advent of the summer transfer window has seen Gueye inch closer to the Goodison Park exit door, with PSG still linked with him, although Manchester United had hoped to give Les Parisiens a run for their money.

Manchester United have seen Ander Herrera call it quits this summer following the expiry of his contract. The departure of the Spaniard has created a huge void in United’s midfield, especially with Nemanja Matic also showing signs of age catching up with him. And, it is the predicament surrounding Matic that makes sense as to why the Premier League giants are pursuing Gueye.

PSG, on the other hand, have a number of talented midfielders on their roster, including former Manchester United Herrera, who joined the Ligue 1 champions upon exiting Old Trafford. But, Les Parisiens have no options beyond Leandro Paredes, as far as the holding midfield role is concerned.

As a result, they have been hot on the heels of Senegalese international Gueye. While the interest from Manchester United had turned his head according to the report, the 29-year-old has now taken a definitive call on his future, with PSG set to sign him in a €32 million deal.

L’Equipe suggest that the only formalities holding the deal back were the final fee and the terms of the player’s contract. And, the report claims that Gueye will pen a five-year contract with PSG, with the €32 million move set to be formally completed next week.

Idrissa Gueye is just a few days away from becoming a new PSG player. As for Manchester United, they must now set their sights elsewhere to quickly find a solution to their midfield woes, as the deadline day of the summer transfer window in England fast approaches.
