Victor Lindelof has claimed he is very happy at Manchester United, pouring cold water on Barcelona’s hopes of signing him in this transfer window.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has dismissed transfer rumours linking him with a summer move to La Liga champions Barcelona, saying that he is very happy at his current club and is looking forward to the season ahead, as reported by the Mirror.

Lindelof joined Manchester United in the summer of 2017, from Portuguese outfit Benfica. After a difficult first season in England, the Swedish centre-half came into his own in the 2018-19 campaign and was easily the Red Devils’ best defender on show.

Till date, Lindelof has made 69 appearances for United, scoring and assisting one goal apiece. The 24-year-old’s performances in the last season seem to have piqued the interest of La Liga champions Barcelona, who are on the lookout for a new defender heading into the next season.

The Catalans were heavily linked with a move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt for a long time now, but with the Dutchman closing in on a move to Serie A champions Juventus, Barcelona have reportedly identified Lindelof as a potential alternative for de Ligt.

Lindelof’s agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, seemed to confirm Barcelona’s interest in his client, as he revealed recently that a major European club was interested in signing the Sweden international, before adding that any move would depend of Manchester United’s decision.

Now, Lindelof has put an end to the speculations though, stating that he is very happy at Manchester United and is looking forward to the 2019-20 season. Addressing the rumours, the 24-year-old said (h/t Mirror): “I’m very, very happy to be a Manchester United player and I’m really looking forward to this season to start and very happy here.

“That’s my answer to that. I always felt like a Manchester United player but last season was a better season for me, I performed better than I did in my first, pretty. I’m just trying to do my best every day and that’s what I work hard for every day to help the team and the club, so yeah.”

Lindelof is contracted with Manchester United till 2021. Given that he was one of their best players last season, it was always going to be unlikely that the 20-time English champions would have sold him this summer.

With Lindelof himself issuing a statement on his future now, Manchester United fans can breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to the possibility of the 24-year-old pairing up with Harry Maguire, who is reportedly closing in on an £80 million transfer to the Mancunian outfit. As far as Barcelona are concerned, they will have to turn their focus elsewhere in search of a centre-back.
