Liverpool are reportedly interested in Junior Firpo and are preparing a bid to land the Real Betis star in the summer.

According to Spanish publication Mucho Deporte, Junior Firpo is back on the radar of a couple of European bigwigs. Liverpool and Barcelona are the teams touted to be chasing the Real Betis star. The Reds are now looking to launch a bid to sign the La Liga defender.

The report further shines light on Liverpool’s chase for Firpo, stating that, while the player has a €50 million release clause in his contract, Real Betis can be convinced at a figure around the €30 million mark. The aim for Jurgen Klopp, as per the report, is to bring in a player to provide competition for places on the left side of the defence to Andrew Robertson.

Junior Firpo has been representing Los Verdiblancos‘ senior team since 2018. The Dominican Republic born star has been playing for Spain up till the Under-21s but has switched his allegiance back to his homeland, albeit without appearing at the senior level for either nation.

The 2018-19 season saw Firpo cement his position as one of the best full-backs in La Liga. 24 appearances in the league itself with a return of 3 goals and 4 assists is a testament to how key he has been, especially given the fact that he missed 13 league games through injuries and suspension. Liverpool have been following Firpo closely.

Alberto Moreno has departed Anfield this summer. This leaves Jurgen Klopp with Andrew Robertson as the only specialist left-back within the squad. James Milner is capable of filling in but is not a viable option anymore, down to the semantics of age and lack of pace.

Liverpool need to add an option on the left side without actually going big, considering the fact that Robertson is pencilled in to start the season as the first-choice left-back. Thus, the pursuit of Junior Firpo makes sense.

The Real Betis defender does not come with a hefty price tag, with €30 million considered nothing in the current transfer market conditions. At 22, age is on Firpo’s side, who can devote a chunk of his prime footballing years to Liverpool.

The whole rumour has a fair chance of being converted into reality. But, it will depend on Real Betis and their willingness to listen to offers for Firpo. Also, there might be other clubs who reignite their interest in the full-back once Liverpool come in with an offer, if they do at all.
