Liverpool are not willing to let go of star defender Dejan Lovren amid speculations linking him to a move to AC Milan this summer.

According to Sky Sports, AC Milan have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Dejan Lovren as Liverpool are appearing hesitant in letting go of their prized defender. It is believed that the Serie A club are yet to make an official bid for the Croatian international but the Reds have also shown minimal interest in setting a price-tag for the defender.

This seems like a bold move from Jurgen Klopp as Lovren has evidently struggled to deal with the increasing competition in the Liverpool defence in recent years. The ex-Southampton centre-back is already behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the pecking order ahead of the start of the new season.

As a matter of fact, Lovren featured in only 13 league games in the recently concluded 2018-19 campaign. And only eleven of those were actually starts, thus signifying the defender’s lack of importance at the club. Hence, a move away from Anfield might make sense for both parties.

For Liverpool, the departure of Lovren will help them cut down on wages. It will also pave the way for the likes of Ki-Jana Hoever and new signing Sepp van den Berg to have a better chance of making an impact in the first-team. As for Lovren himself, he will receive an opportunity of reviving his career following a couple of disappointing seasons at Anfield.

And AC Milan, in that regard, could be an interesting suitor for the Croatian international. The Italian giants have struggled with injuries to their key players like Mattia Caldara while Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Musacchio remain their only reliable options in central defence. Therefore, the newly appointed Marco Giampaolo could welcome the addition of someone like Lovren.

The Liverpool defender has a vast amount of experience in European top-flight football and his robust style of play could complement the likes of Romagnoli, Caldara and even Musacchio. He can also be considered as a replacement for Cristian Zapata, who joined Genoa for free this summer.

But, Liverpool’s hesitancy in letting go of Lovren could create a conflict and it will be intriguing to see whether Klopp has any plans with the experienced defender next season. If not, then Lovren should definitely push for a move away from Anfield this summer in search of regular playing time.
