Manchester United are reportedly on the trails of Sevilla forward Wissam Ben Yedder as they seek to replace the wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United’s transfer plans reportedly include the signing of a striker as they are currently unhappy with the existing options. According to Spanish publication Orgullo de Nervion, Manchester United have Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder firmly in their sights as the Premier League clubs look to trigger his release clause.

Ben Yedder has been one of Sevilla’s most consistent performers for the last few seasons. Since joining from Toulouse back in 2016, Ben Yedder hasn’t exactly forged a reputation of being a great, prolific striker, but his displays previous season put him closer to the bracket.

30 goals in all competitions, including 18 in La Liga made him a substantial presence at Sevilla. Add 9 assists in the league and one can argue Ben Yedder is hitting his peak and becoming an all-round performer for his side. Naturally, clubs like Manchester United are showing an interest in the 28-year-old.

The Old Trafford side are reportedly in the market for a striker, and for good reason. Romelu Lukaku is considering his Manchester United future, having already been a figure of concern due to his inconsistencis. With the Belgian linked with a move to Inter Milan, United’s interest in Ben Yedder is justified because the Frenchman brings in plenty of goals and assists to the plate.

The French forward has a €40 million release clause in his contract, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would feel this could be met with ease by the Red Devils. If Manchester United could make this transfer happen, then it could open the door for Lukaku to move to Inter Milan, with whom the Belgian has reportedly agreed personal terms.

A transfer fee with Inter is yet to be agreed as Manchester United are looking to recoup most of the £75 million they paid to sign Lukaku two years ago. The Belgian’s sale could also somewhat help United fund the Ben Yedder transfer.

While the striker has admitted he could be looking at a more significant challenge this summer, he is unlikely to be perturbed if a move fails to materialise, as per the report. But considering Manchester United’s need for a proven goalscorer, the move for Ben Yedder should be discussed with utmost importance by the club hierarchy.

It now remains to be seen how things develop in the days and weeks to come. The move for Ben Yedder though, is understandably dependent on Lukaku’s future and it will be interesting to see how things pan out.
