Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly slapped an £80 million price-tag on Real Madrid target Christian Eriksen, who revealed he is open to a transfer to Spain.

According to a report from The Sun, Real Madrid have been told to cough up £80 million if they want to sign Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen from Champions League runners-up Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid are planning a huge summer overhaul, after a disappointing 2018-19 campaign in comparison to their lofty standards. Manager Zinedine Zidane is planning a major squad revamp, having already signed striker Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt, while Eden Hazard is set to join from Chelsea, with a fee being agreed between the two clubs.

The Merengues are now eyeing an addition to their midfield department, with their current options failing to make much of an impression last season. Ballon d’Or holder Luka Modric struggled for most parts of the campaign, as did German international Toni Kroos, while the likes of Isco and Dani Ceballos did not set the stage alight either.

Modric will turn 34 years old in September and judging by his performances last season, appears to be regressing quite sharply. And manager Zidane is believed to be open to the idea of offloading the Croatian international in the summer, in order to bring someone younger into the fold, with Eriksen emerging as his primary choice to replace the veteran.

Eriksen joined Tottenham from Ajax for a bargain £10.9 million fee in 2013 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the finest playmakers in the Premier League and Europe. The 27-year-old has made over 270 appearances for Spurs and has been an integral member of the enterprising team that Mauricio Pochettino has built.

Eriksen finished the 2018-19 season with a return of 10 goals and 17 assists from 51 matches in all competitions, helping them to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League final. However, the midfielder has revealed that he is ready to move on from Tottenham this summer as he seeks a step-up in his career, with Real Madrid his preferred destination.

The 27-year-old will be entering the final twelve months of his contract with Tottenham and Real Madrid were hoping to capitalize on the situation by signing him up in a cut-price deal. However, Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy, known to be one of the toughest negotiators around, has slapped an £80 million price-tag on Eriksen.

Real Madrid, as per the report, are unwilling to meet that valuation, given that they have already spent heavily on Jovic and will reportedly be shelling out £88 million to land Hazard, with Zidane eyeing more additions to the squad. It remains to be seen if Los Blancos are able to get their man this summer or turn their attention elsewhere.
