Manchester United should go all out to try and sign England international Harry Maguire this summer, opines former Red Devils’ star Teddy Sheringham.

In a recent interview, as reported by the Mirror, former Manchester United Teddy Sheringham has advised the club to sign Leicester City and England centre-back Harry Maguire at all costs in the ongoing transfer window.

The 2018-19 campaign was a disappointing one for Manchester United, as they finished sixth in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification for the next season. The Red Devils’ defence struggled all season long, as they ended up shipping 54 league goals – their worst defensive record in the Premier League era.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing a massive squad overhaul in the summer, with a new defender likely to be high on his shopping list. A number of names have been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but Maguire is someone who has been on the club’s radar since last year.

The Leicester City star was the primary transfer target for former manager Jose Mourinho last summer after an excellent World Cup campaign with England, but the transfer never materialised. However, Maguire is believed to be back on Manchester United’s radar, after yet another strong season with the Foxes.

And Sheringham, who spent four years at Manchester United between 1997 and 2001, has claimed that his former club needs a new leader at the back and Maguire could be the answer for their defensive issues.

“Central defence is a big area where they need to find a Vincent Kompany or Tony Adams-type player. I think Harry Maguire is the one for me. He’s got great leadership qualities, and has a real calming influence. He’s very similar to Rio Ferdinand, in that he’s cool on the ball and defends very well. That would be a fine start from my point of view,” the 53-year-old said.

Maguire came through the youth ranks at Barnsley, before moving to Sheffield United where he made over 150 appearances. The Englishman then made the switch to Hull City in 2014 and made a solid impression in the 2016-17 term when they ended up getting relegated from the Premier League.

Having joined Leicester City in 2017, the 26-year-old has established himself one of the finest defenders in the Premier League, while becoming a regular for the English national team. In the recently concluded campaign, Maguire made 32 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with three goals.

It is clear that Sheringham holds Maguire in very high regard and if recent reports are to be believed, Manchester United are set to launch another attempt to sign him this time out. However, with Arsenal also interested in the Englishman, the Red Devils need to act fast if they are to secure the transfer.
