Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to land Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes in the summer transfer window.

As per a report by Portuguese outlet A Bola, Manchester United are inching closer to securing the services of Bruno Fernandes. The Premier League heavyweights lead AC Milan in the race to sign the Portuguese international on the summer transfer window.

Last summer was a testing time for Sporting Lisbon as a training ground incident involving the club’s fans put the Portuguese giants in an odd predicament. Several stars ended up departing, but Bruno Fernandes stayed put and was subsequently rewarded with the club captaincy.

The player has been nothing short of phenomenal this term, with an incredible tally of 27 goals and 15 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. And, while Sporting are lagging behind FC Porto and Benfica, Fernandes’ exploits have been noticed, with Manchester United, in particular, keen on signing him.

The midfield displays under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been much improved than they were before Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in December. But, recent performances show that there is room for upgrade, especially when it comes to consistent returns in front of goal.

To that end, Bruno Fernandes is a viable target for Manchester United to pursue. And, a space in the midfield department could well open up for the Premier League heavyweights, with Ander Herrera being heavily linked with a move to PSG, as per widespread reports.

In addition to Herrera, Juan Mata could also depart from Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, with his contract set to run out at the end of the season. Signing Fernandes could thus, help refresh the options at Solskjaer’s disposal to some extent, which is why Manchester United have reportedly been in talks with the Portuguese international’s camp.

But, Manchester United will have to contend with AC Milan for the signature of the 24-year-old, although A Bola claim that the Red Devils are in pole position to land him. The Premier League giants though, will have to shell out €100 million to secure his services, with Sporting only willing to let him leave if a suitor meets his release clause.

The race to sign Bruno Fernandes in the summer transfer window is becoming more interesting with each new report. As of now, Manchester United look like they will end up signing the Portuguese international, but it remains to be seen how things pan out in the coming weeks.
