Manchester United have reportedly submitted an initial enquiry to land €500 million rated Real Madrid star Raphael Varane this summer.

According to a report by The Independent, Manchester United have taken the initial steps to secure the services of Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights have made initial enquiries to Real Madrid over a possible move for the Frenchman, who has a €500 million release clause in his contract.

Raphael Varane has already enjoyed one of the truly great footballing careers, something most players strive to achieve at the beginning of their professional lives. Aged just 25, the Frenchman has gone on to win every major trophy, bar the UEFA European Championship, he has ever competed for, on club and international levels.

At Real Madrid, he has managed to carve out a regular place for himself after initially battling for a regular role when Pepe was at the club. But, since the Portuguese’s departure, there has been no looking back for Varane, who has gone on to become one of the best centre-backs in the world. With it, interest from other clubs has also arrived, most prominently from Manchester United.

The Red Devils have long been in search of a top class centre-back, with defence proving to be their main weakness for quite some time now. In particular, Manchester United are in need of a leader at the back, something Varane has grown to become while at Real Madrid.

United have also recently been boosted by the breaking of the news that Varane could be seeking a new challenge in the summer transfer window by leaving Real Madrid. And, the Premier League heavyweights have made initial enquiries to Los Blancos over the possibility of signing the Frenchman.

But, signing the 25-year-old might just be a tall order, with recent reports suggesting that Real Madrid are unwilling to sell the player and will point towards his €500 million release clause. But, should the La Liga giants be ready to part ways with their star defender, the report suggests that he could be available for a much affordable amount.

Manchester United though, will have to contend with PSG in the race to sign Varane. As of now, it looks like the only certainty is that the two European heavyweights are keen on signing the €500 million-rated Real Madrid star, and it remains to be seen if his stint at the Bernabeu comes to an end this summer.
