Arsenal are set to explore the idea of signing David Alaba from Bayern Munich in the summer after his position for next season has become a doubt.

Arsenal have been in the news during the international break, with links to multiple players from different leagues as part of their summer business. The Sun are now reporting of a possible Arsenal interest in signing Bayern Munich’s David Alaba in the summer after the Bavarians made a high profile signing in the Austrian’s position.

Alaba is known to be an Arsenal fan in his own words, and it could be the club he might be playing for next season. The Austrian’s position is under threat at Bayern after the German champions confirmed the signing of Lucas Hernandez in a club record deal from Atletico Madrid.

Alaba has professed himself to be an Arsenal fan for a long time, and thus the report from The Sun are hinting towards a move to the Emirates. Arsenal, themselves are on the lookout for new players in the summer window, with a new left-back among others topping their summer wish-list.

Bayern have so far been coy on a possible exit for Alaba, but they could be open to a sale for the Austrian who has been a long time servant at the club. His position as Bayern’s first choice left-back has been left in question following the acquisition of Hernandez, as the understanding is the Bavarians are not going to keep the record signing on the bench.

So Alaba may have to find a new club, and Arsenal might be interested in signing a player who at just 26 years of age, has gone on to make 335 appearances for Bayern since joining the club back in 2010. He has contributed with 28 goals and 44 assists in all competitions during this time.

Alaba has a contract with Bayern until 2020 but the Austrian is at an age and position in his career where he might not want to play second fiddle. Alternatively, the Austrian could be open to the challenge of competing with Hernandez, as he has repeatedly stated his happiness at the Allianz Arena.

As for Arsenal, it might come as a piece of good news that a player of Alaba’s quality might just be open to the idea of playing at the Emirates, although they will have to take their chances with Sead Kolasinac, who has been in such good form this season to play second fiddle. Moreover he might not come cheap, which could be a problem considering Arsenal’s financial situation.

The coming months will provide better clarity on this situation, but if Arsenal are really interested, then they could go all out to sign the Austrian. The Gunners are looking to overhaul their defence, with the likes of Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona also linked with a move. If Arsenal can come up with a reasonable budget, they have the players in the market to sign and strengthen their backline.
