Arsenal reportedly want Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera to replace the outgoing Aaron Ramsey and could get him on a free transfer next summer.

Arsenal’s search for Aaron Ramsey’s replacement has led them on the trails of Mexican international Hector Herrera, who could be available on a free transfer in the summer. According to a report by Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, the Gunners are set to join the chase to sign the FC Porto midfielder in the summer.

Since Unai Emery took over the reins of Arsenal at the beginning of the season, Arsenal have been linked with a number of midfielders. The Gunners even reinforced their midfield by signing Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira last summer.

But, another midfielder’s situation has the club scouring for options again. Aaron Ramsey’s non-existent Arsenal future has become clearer with every progress week. The Welshman is now set to leave at the end of the season, possibly to Juventus, and the Gunners thus, need a replacement. The latest option seems to be Hector Herrera.

A deal might for the Mexican international make sense for there won’t be any transfer fee involved, something that might go well with the Arsenal board, considering their dearth of transfer funds. Herrera is thus, a viable alternative to Ever Banega, who has also been reported as a target.

Herrera has been with Porto since the summer of 2013, and has since grown in stature at the club. The 28-year-old has made more than 230 appearances for the Portuguese giants, and his excellent, consistent form has consistently attracted the attention of some elite clubs across Europe and England.

At present, Arsenal are not the only clubs showing an interest. After it was revealed that Herrera will not be signing a new deal with Porto, AS Roma and Inter Milan have been touted as the potential front-runners for his signature.

To prevail in the race to sign the Mexican international, Roma are trying to make a deal happen in January, although Porto are refusing to do a deal despite the fact that he will leave for free in the summer.

That leaves Herrera with plenty of options when the summer window opens and he will be in a position to go with the highest bidder. Arsenal are thus, in a healthy position, when it comes to their pursuit of the Mexican international, who will be able too provide the best years of his career to him.

As for their finances, he could be a coup considering Barcelona were quoted a €50 million asking price last summer. Additionally, with Ramsey also leaving on a free, it would be a good idea to sign Herrera and replace the Welshman without any additional cost. It now remains to be seen how things develop in the weeks and months to come, as Herrera inches closer to his Porto exit.
