Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Barcelona superstar Denis Suarez in the ongoing transfer window

According to reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal are on the verge of securing the services of Denis Suarez in the ongoing transfer window. The Spaniard is set to be reunited with Unai Emery at the Emirates, having grown frustrated at the lack of opportunities coming his way at Barcelona.

Denis Suarez returned to Barcelona in the summer of 2016, following a successful one-season spell with Villarreal. The second coming at Camp Nou though, hasn’t quite gone as planned, with the player largely restricted to appearances in cup competitions in addition to rare starts in league and Europe.

The Spaniard has been at the lowest ebb of his career under Ernesto Valverde, managing to start just 12 games since the start of last season, an alarming number for a player who is still developing. His position has unsurprisingly left Denis frustrated, with a move away Barcelona heavily speculated. Arsenal are among the clubs that have shown an interest.

Arsenal did bolster their midfield last summer by signing Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. But, the aforementioned duo have more defensive responsibilities on their shoulders, while Denis is more accustomed to attacking contributions. The interest in the Barcelona outcast though, is explained by Aaron Ramsey’s situation.

The Welshman is slated to leave Arsenal for free after the end of the season, which would open up a space for a creative midfielder in the first-team squad, making Denis a viable target for the Gunners. The Premier League heavyweights though, are not waiting till the summer to make their move for the 24-year-old.

The Gunners are leading the race to sign the out-of-favour Barcelona midfielder, with AC Milan and AS Roma also interested in him. The player is keen on reuniting with Unai Emery at Arsenal, having played under the Basque coach at Sevilla in the 2014-15 season, winning the Europa League.

As things stand, it looks highly likely that Arsenal will bolster their midfield by adding Denis Suarez, whose versatility potentially makes him an asset at the Emirates. As the player’s Barcelona career winds down for a second time, it now remains to be seen if the Gunners can wrap up the transfer quickly.
