Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly keen on making a move for Uruguayan international Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window.

As per a report from TransferMarketWeb.com, Real Madrid are set to launch an intense pursuit of PSG striker Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window, as they look to recover from a disappointing start to the season.

Real Madrid have struggled to fill the vacancy left behind by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus in the summer transfer window. Having overseen a disastrous start to the season since the Portuguese’s exit, the Merengues oversaw a managerial change, sacking Julen Lopetegui and replacing him with former player Santiago Solari.

While results have improved to some extent under the new manager, the attack continues to underwhelm for Los Blancos. A lot of expectations were riding on Gareth Bale, as he was tipped to finally emerge out of Ronaldo’s shadows and become Real Madrid’s MVP, but that has not been the case.

Karim Benzema, after a bright start to the campaign, has seen his form fizzle out, while summer signing Mariano Diaz, who took Ronaldo’s No. 7 jersey this season, has hardly looked the part. Marco Asensio too has blown hot and cold over the course of the campaign, contributing to the club’s struggles at the top.

Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez is keen on making a marquee signing in the January transfer window, in order to resolve his team’s problems in attack. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane has been perennially linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, while Argentine international Mauro Icardi has also been mentioned as a viable target.

However, the club supremo has now reportedly set his sights on Cavani. The 31-year-old Uruguayan international was linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window as well, but no move materialized at the time. But, the Merengues are set to renew their interest in the PSG superstar with a fresh bid to sign him in the winter transfer window.

Cavani joined PSG from Napoli in 2013 for £55 million and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most prolific goal-getters across Europe. Since moving to Paris, the striker has bagged 182 goals and set up 35 more in 262 appearances, winning numerous titles and trophies, and is the club’s highest ever goalscorer as well.

The 31-year-old has been in fine form for Les Parisiens so far in the 2018-19 campaign, having netted 12 times and set up four more in 16 matches across all competitions.

Cavani has what it takes to fill in the giant shoes left vacant by the Ronaldo at Real Madrid. He was just four goals shy of the Portuguese maverick’s tally last season, had outscored the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in the 2016-17 campaign and has a goal more than him in the ongoing campaign.

Cavani still has 18 months left on his current deal with the French champions, but is believed to be open to a move to Spain. But, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid will be able to get their hands on their target in the January transfer window.
