Arsenal are reportedly looking towards Liverpool star Alberto Moreno as the ideal player to replace Nacho Monreal next summer

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Arsenal have made up their mind on scouring the transfer market for a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal. The Spaniard, whose contract is set to run out at the end of the season, could be succeeded at the Emirates by compatriot and Liverpool star Alberto Moreno.

Moreno has endured a mixed bag of a stint at Liverpool since making his way to Anfield from Sevilla in the summer of 2014. While the Spaniard was a regular in two of the seasons for the Reds, he has had to play second fiddle for the rest of his time at the club, with even James Milner usurping him in one of the campaigns.

The 2018-19 season though, has been by far the worst for Moreno at Anfield, having only managed to start two times in addition to another substitute appearance across all competitions. With his stature declining considerably, the player has decided to leave Liverpool, a situation which has Arsenal interested.

Unai Emery currently has Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal as his two natural options for the left side of the defence. But, the duo have been unavailable for the most part so far this season, meaning the Arsenal boss has had to fall back on the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and even Granit Xhaka to play as makeshift left-back.

To make matters worse, it is looking extremely likely that Monreal will depart from the Emirates in any of the next two transfer windows, with his current deal expiring next summer. While Arsenal are eager to agree fresh terms with the Spaniard, chances are he could leave the club, making Liverpool star Moreno a viable target.

Liverpool have reportedly given up on getting Moreno to sign a new contract, meaning the 26-year-old is set to move away from Anfield as a free agent. This scenario makes the defender an even more attractive prospect for Arsenal, who can sign a player who has Premier League experience on the cheap. Moreover, the transfer seems to have the backing of Emery, who has previously worked with Moreno at Sevilla.

Arsenal look set to bolster their squad over the next two windows to continue Unai Emery’s project at the Emirates. It now remains to be seen if Alberto Moreno becomes the latest player to arrive at the club, or if the Liverpool star ends up making his way elsewhere.
