Liverpool summer signing Fabinho is reportedly a shock January transfer target for AC Milan, who are in the market for a holding midfielder

According to a report by Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, AC Milan are lining up a shock move to secure the services of Fabinho in the January transfer window. The Brazilian international has been off to a slow start at Liverpool following his summer move from AS Monaco.

Fabinho arrived at Liverpool this past summer, after three fruitful campaigns with AS Monaco, with whom he had even won the Ligue 1 title against all odds. At Anfield, however, it hasn’t all been a bed of roses for the 25-year-old, who took over a month to make his first start for the Reds.

Across all competitions, the player has managed just eight appearances, although recent outings suggest he may be starting to nail down a regular spot for himself in the starting spot. However, his position at Liverpool has alerted AC Milan, who are in the market for a holding midfielder.

The Rossoneri are starting to find a stable footing under the tutelage of Gennaro Gattuso, who has guided the team to 5th on the Serie A table. But, there is a major hole to plug for the AC Milan boss, owing to Lucas Biglia’s long-term injury – the Argentine is out till March at the earliest.

In Biglia’s absence, Ricardo Montolivo is the only natural holding midfielder, with the veteran Italian out of favour with Gattuso. Tiemoue Bakayoko is another option for the AC Milan manager, although the Frenchman, who recently received a word of support from the Liverpool summer signing, flourishes more when he has lesser defensive responsibilities on his shoulders.

Fabinho is thus, a viable target for AC Milan, although it is hard to see Liverpool agreeing to let the Brazilian international leave just six months after joining the club. The report though, has suggested an alternative – a loan move till the end of the season.

Either way, it looks highly unlikely that Fabinho will make his way out of Liverpool, despite his early struggles, especially with signs that he is starting to command a regular place in the side with top notch performances.

AC Milan will hope to tempt Fabinho with regular game time. But, if he manages to nail down a spot for himself in the starting lineup in the coming weeks, the Rossoneri’s interest could end just as quickly. As things stand, the 25-year-old should remain a Liverpool player beyond January.
