Barcelona academy graduate Thiago Alcantara is reportedly eager to leave Bayern Munich and join Real Madrid ahead of this week’s transfer deadline.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Thiago Alcantara is keen on returning to Spain, albeit to join former club Barcelona’s bitter rivals, Real Madrid. The Bayern Munich midfielder is ready to push for a move to the Bernabeu, although Florentino Perez is not showing much interest for now.

Thiago has progressed leaps and bounds since joining Bayern Munich from Barcelona in the summer of 2013. Over the last five years, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the world. But, it has been widely reported that Die Roten are not averse to the idea of offloading the Spanish international this summer.

The arrival of Leon Goretzka has beefed up midfield options for Niko Kovac, who could be open to selling Thiago now. If the 27-year-old does depart from the Allianz Arena, the likeliest destination appears to be a return to Spain, with Real Madrid and former club Barcelona among those who have been linked with him.

At Real Madrid, Julen Lopetegui does have a number of creative options at his disposal despite the departure of Mateo Kovacic on a season-long loan deal to Chelsea. But, the manager ought to find a replacement for Modric, who is in the twilight of his career and is linked with a possible move away from the Bernabeu, making Thiago a viable target.

Barcelona too, were believed to be scouring the possibility of bringing their former star back to Camp Nou. But, the Blaugrana have since turned their attention towards other targets, thereby leaving Real Madrid as the only candidates that can possibly sign him this summer.

Los Blancos‘ hopes of signing the 27-year-old have now been boosted further, with the player keen on making his way back to Spain. The report suggests that Thiago has made himself available, but the major obstacle is Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s hesitancy in signing him.

Julen Lopetegui though, has made it clear that he would like to add the former Barcelona midfielder to his squad. But, the chances of the move seeing the light of the day appear to be bleak, with just five days remaining for the summer transfer window to slam shut in Spain.

It now remains to be seen if Real Madrid can complete their transfer spending in style by landing Thiago, or if the Spanish international ends up staying put at Bayern Munich instead.
