The Croatian midfielder is set on making a temporary move to Stamford Bridge after making it clear that he no longer wishes to play for Real Madrid.

Chelsea are in talks with Real Madrid over a potential loan deal for the unhappy midfielder, Mateo Kovacic. Marca are reporting that Real Madrid have green-lit the agreement for Kovacic to join Chelsea on loan for the season, but have not included an option for a permanent purchase, something the Stamford Bridge club would be keen on.

Mateo Kovacic has seemingly had his way and his wish to leave Real Madrid, where to his knowledge he would still be a fringe player in the coming season. With many possible destinations mooted for the Croatian to move to, including links with Manchester United, but its Chelsea who have taken the march to bring him on loan.

It’s no secret that Kovacic is extremely unhappy at Real Madrid, so much so that he refused to train with the first team upon his return to the club. Madrid had been keen to keep him at the club, but his public display of conflict and angling for a move has seemingly left them with no choice but to accept a loan offer from Chelsea.

However, Madrid have not included an option for Chelsea to purchase him outright after the loan deal ends. This could be the reason this deal might go down the wire because Chelsea would want such an option and are expected to negotiate to include a purchase option. Given a choice, the Blues would have bought him outright in this window.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri had expressed his desire to bring in another midfielder, despite the recent signing of Jorginho from Napoli. The Italian wants someone with a different profile to what he currently has in his ranks, and Kovacic seemingly fit the bill. Chelsea had also been linked with a sensational move for Aaron Ramsey from Arsenal.

But now they are seemingly settled in for a deal to bring Kovacic to Stamford Bridge. Kovacic’s main problem at Madrid had been the lack of regular game time. Despite these claims, Kovacic did feature 36 times in all competitions last season for Madrid, but generally as an option from the bench, a role he does not wish to play anymore.

Chelsea could give Kovacic regular football he so wishes to have. But with the 24-year-old set to move only on loan, Real Madrid, who were so keen to keep him at the club know that he has excellent value in the market, and if he is to perform well in the Premier League, they could well ask for more than the €70 million they currently rate him at.

As for Chelsea, he could be a good signing, and with the player also hungry for success, it could be a win-win situation for all three parties. Kovacic, if he successfully completes the deal will likely be in competition with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Cesc Fabregas, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ross Barkley for a starting position at Chelsea.
