Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Daniele Rugani, who is also being targeted by Chelsea over a possible move this summer

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Real Madrid have set their sights on Daniele Rugani. Los Blancos are hoping their good relationship with Juventus will help them land the Italian international, who is also the subject of interest from Chelsea.

Rugani has endured a frustrating time within the Juventus first-team setup, with senior figures firmly established in the backline. As a result, the 24-year-old has had to fend for the few opportunities that come his way. To make matters worse, the return of Leonardo Bonucci is likely to reduce his prospects further.

With regular first-team football possibly being hard to come by, Rugani could be a player who will be relatively straightforward to land this summer. His situation has thus, piqued the interest of a number of big-name clubs, with Chelsea and Real Madrid the front-runners in his pursuit.

At Chelsea, Rugani is being viewed as a long-term recruitment, with his arrival potentially creating a formidable three-pronged central defensive unit also consisting of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. The Blues are also reportedly in advanced talks with Juventus over a possible move.

But, Chelsea have been unsuccessful in their bid to land Rugani thus far. The West Londoners now face stiff competition from Real Madrid in pursuit of the Italian international, with the Spanish heavyweights also looking to sign a centre-back this summer.

Julen Lopetegui has two world class defenders in Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane at his disposal. But, beyond the duo, there is precious little on offer, with Jesus Vallejo not being convincing enough in a Real Madrid shirt thus far, while Nacho is only seen as a backup option.

Rugani is thus, a viable target for Real Madrid, who are primed to launch the offensive for him imminently. Los Blancos should also have a distinct advantage in pursuit of the 24-year-old, as they have more time on their hands to complete their signings as compared to Chelsea, while also having Champions League football on offer.

Real Madrid will also hope their strong relationship with Juventus bears fruit in their bid to sign Rugani. As far as Chelsea are concerned, time seems to be running out for them, and they might only have one last chance to secure his services, lest they risk losing the player to the European champions.
