Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign Leicester City star Harry Maguire, who is being targeted by Manchester United over a move this summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Real Madrid are showing an interest in signing Harry Maguire. Los Blancos have joined Manchester United, who were believed to be the favourites to land him, in pursuit of the Leicester City defender.

Maguire has the world at his feet after a fantastic last 12 months. The domestic campaign with Leicester City ended with him being named the club’s Player of the Year. But, his performances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup have catapulted him to be regarded as one of the best defenders in England.

With the tag and advent in stature has also come interest from top clubs. Thus far, Manchester United have been the front-runners in pursuit of the 25-year-old. But, there is a new entrant in the race to sign Maguire – Real Madrid.

Los Blancos haven’t really been prioritising the addition of a centre-back so far, with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo keeping their focus on bolstering the attack. But, a closer look at Julen Lopetegui’s options at the heart of defence will reveal that there isn’t a lot of quality at the disposal of the Real Madrid boss.

Jesus Vallejo has failed to stamp his authority while Nacho is only considered a backup. Maguire is thus, a viable target for Real Madrid, with his aerial abilities an added quality that makes him an appealing prospect. But, the European champions will have to beat Manchester United in pursuit of the player.

At Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s centre-backs flattered to deceive at different junctures of the 2017-18 season. The Manchester United boss has thus, been in pursuit of a central defender for the third successive summer, with the objective possibly being to find a reliable partner for Eric Bailly.

With Marcos Rojo likely to be sold, and the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling also facing uncertain futures at Manchester United, Maguire could be a solid replacement. But, the biggest obstacle for the Red Devils and Real Madrid will be the player’s price tag.

Leicester City will ask for a price close to Virgil van Dijk’s world record fee to part ways with Maguire, in a bid to ward off his suitors. But, Maguire’s recent comments hinting towards a summer exit could force the Foxes’ hand, if Manchester United or Real Madrid come in with a generous offer.

The race to sign Maguire has become a whole lot more interesting with the entrance of Real Madrid in the fray. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United can wrap up the deal quickly, or if they concede defeat to the European champions, considering the transfer window in England will close much before than it will in Spain.
